Tips to Extend the Life of Your Car in Japan

Buying a used car in Japan is a smart and economical choice for many foreigners. However, Japan’s sharp seasonal temperature changes — from hot, humid summers to cold winters — demand extra care to keep your vehicle in good shape.

Here are five key tips to extend the lifespan of your used car:

  1. Pay attention to the Shaken (Vehicle Inspection)
This mandatory inspection, required every two years, checks the safety and condition of the car. For used vehicles, it can reveal hidden issues that need prompt repair.
  2. Change the engine oil regularly
Frequent temperature changes affect oil performance. Change the oil immediately after buying a used car.
Do it every 5,000 km or as indicated in the vehicle’s manual.
  3. Check the battery often
Thermal variation reduces battery lifespan. If the car remains unused for long periods, the charge can drop even without use.
  4. Monitor and rotate the tires
Temperature changes affect tire pressure. Check air pressure regularly and rotate tires every 10,000 km to ensure even wear.
  5. Inspect the brakes frequently
Used cars may have hidden brake wear. Routine checks help prevent failures, especially during emergencies.
