Essential Traffic Rules for Foreigners in Japan: Stay Safe on the Road

In Japan, traffic rules are strictly enforced, and it is important for Filipinos living in the country to be aware of the differences between traffic laws in the Philippines and Japan. One of the first differences you will notice is that in Japan, driving is on the left side of the road, while in the Philippines, driving is on the right. This means that when driving in Japan, you need to be alert to other drivers’ behavior and follow the correct direction on the roads.

Another key difference is the speed limit. In Japan, speed limits are more restrictive and vary depending on the type of road. In urban areas, the limit is typically 40 km/h, while on highways, it can reach 100 km/h or more. It is crucial to respect these limits, as fines for speeding are high.

Moreover, in Japan, seatbelt use is mandatory for all passengers in the vehicle, regardless of where they are sitting. In the Philippines, seatbelt use is required only for the driver and front-seat passengers.

Another important rule is the respect for pedestrian crossings. Japanese drivers slow down immediately when approaching a crosswalk, something that may not be as common in the Philippines.
Lastly, Japan has much stricter legislation regarding alcohol on the road than the Philippines. Any amount of alcohol in the bloodstream can lead to imprisonment and severe penalties, so it is essential never to drive after drinking.
